Markham already feels like home for York University; a new campus in the city only made sense.
“York has always seen itself as the University of York Region even though we are situated in the City of Toronto,” says York University President and Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri, noting York already has “tremendous links” to the York Region via research programs, business partnerships and student training and co-ops.
York’s new Markham Centre home, will be a model for 21st-century university campuses, Shoukri says, and will be designed to encourage collaborative, experiential learning. It will also serve a growing need in the surrounding community – both for businesses looking for strategic partnerships and students looking for an academic home. The new campus will host a few joint programs with Seneca College.
